1.b. Last Insights on CASH

Pathward Financial, Inc.'s recent performance was negatively impacted by the sale of its insurance business, which resulted in a pre-tax loss of $3.9 million and $2.9 million in total after-tax costs related to BOLI restructuring. This unexpected loss likely weighed on the company's results. Additionally, the absence of share buyback activity might have contributed to the negative sentiment, as it would have otherwise provided a boost to earnings per share.

Revenue Growth Drivers

The company's revenue growth is expected to be driven by three main areas: optimizing the balance sheet through rotation from securities to loans, fee income from balance sheet velocity, and noninterest income from new contracts. Loans and leases at December 31 were $5 billion, up from $4.6 billion last year, driven by a $531 million increase in commercial finance loans. The company is optimistic about the pipeline for commercial finance, particularly in USDA, SBA, and working capital.

Deposits held on the balance sheet at December 31 totaled $6.4 billion, a $170 million decrease from a year ago. Liquidity remains strong, with $3.7 billion available. The company's credit performance remains stable, with net charge-offs (NCOs) at 0 and nonperforming loans ticking up slightly. Management does not see anything systematic or concerning in the portfolio.

Guidance and Valuation

Pathward Financial increased its fiscal year 2026 guidance to an EPS range of $8.55 to $9.05. The company's robust partner pipeline and enthusiasm about tax season are expected to drive growth. With a current P/E Ratio of 10.01 and a P/TBV that can be derived from the given 'P/B Ratio' of 2.24, the market appears to be pricing in moderate growth expectations. Analysts estimate next year's revenue growth at 5.4%, which is relatively in line with the current valuation multiples.

Strategic Opportunities and Threats

The company does not see the rise of fintechs obtaining bank charters as a significant threat, rather an opportunity for partnerships. It believes its unique value propositions and position in the marketplace allow it to help a greater variety of consumers and businesses. The company is exploring opportunities in digital assets, but it is still in the early stages, and they are looking at it as a B2B use case.
