1.b. Last Insights on WEX

WEX Inc.'s recent performance was negatively impacted by sluggish growth, mainly due to weakness in its Mobility segment and client loss. Despite an "inflection point" in Q4 2025, marked by faster earnings growth and improving operating leverage, weak Q1 2026 guidance tempered investor enthusiasm. Additionally, concerns over strategic positioning versus Corpay, a competitor, have led to a Hold rating (Source: 2026-02-13). WEX's aggressive buybacks, including 13% of shares this year, may provide some support, but its growth prospects are being closely watched.

1.c. Company Highlights

2. WEX Q1 2026: Strong Revenue Beat, Margins Under Pressure

WEX delivered first‑quarter revenue of $673.8 million, up 5.8% YoY and topping the high end of its guidance range. Adjusted net income per diluted share hit $4.15, an 18.2% YoY increase, beating the $4.08 consensus (Staff, Q1 earnings call). Adjusted operating income margin slipped 50 basis points, largely due to higher credit losses and macro headwinds. On a 12‑month trailing basis, adjusted free cash flow rose 14% to $671 million, supporting a P/E of 16.72 and an EV/EBITDA of 6.52, with Net Debt/EBITDA at 1.05, indicating a lean balance sheet.

Publication Date: Apr -26

📋 Highlights
  • Revenue Growth Exceeds Guidance: Q1 revenue of $673.8 million rose 5.8% YoY, outperforming guidance and driven by 5.4% core growth excluding fuel prices and FX.
  • Adjusted EPS Surge: Adjusted net income per share hit $4.15, up 18.2% YoY, with 19.4% growth when excluding macro factors.
  • Strong Segment Performance: Corporate payments (+9.3%), benefits (+8.5%), and mobility (+3.2%) drove growth, with mobility showing best-in-5-quirter 3% organic growth.
  • Margin Expansion & Cost Savings: $50 million in 2026 cost savings goals achieved, contributing to 130 bps full-year operating margin improvement and 1.1% Q1 margin expansion from automation.
  • Robust Free Cash Flow: Generated $671 million in trailing 12-month adjusted free cash flow (+14%), enabling debt reduction and capital flexibility with a 3.1x leverage ratio (target: <3x).

Revenue Drivers: Mobility, Benefits, Corporate Payments

Growth came from a 3.2% rise in mobility, 8.5% in benefits, and 9.3% in corporate payments. Mobility revenue was hit by higher U.S. fuel prices but offset by international fuel spreads; however, mobility transaction volume fell 3% YoY. Benefits saw the largest margin lift, while corporate payments benefitted from a 9.3% revenue jump, underscoring the strength of WEX’s diversified payment ecosystem.

Profitability & Margin Analysis

Adjusted operating margins are expected to climb 130 bps for the year, with a 75‑basis‑point improvement once fuel price impacts are stripped out. The company’s focus on AI‑driven automation is projected to deliver $50 million in cost savings, already reflected in Q1 margin expansion. Credit losses remain a concern, but the company’s robust capital deployment strategy keeps ROE high at 26.96% and ROIC at 7.05%.

Capital Allocation & Balance Sheet Health

WEX Bank continues to provide low‑cost funding, keeping leverage at 3.1x—flat from Q4 and within its 2.5‑3.5x target range. The bank’s deposit migration is largely complete, with $400 million in remaining migration, improving economics by 50‑100 bps. The firm prioritizes debt reduction until the leverage ratio falls below 3x, preserving flexibility for future M&A or share repurchases.

Future Outlook & Guidance

Management forecasts Q2 revenue of $727–747 million and adjusted EPS of $4.93–5.13, with full‑year revenue of $2.82–2.88 billion and EPS of $18.95–19.55. The guidance reflects a revised fuel price assumption of $4.30/gal in Q2 and $3.70/gal for the year, with no rate cuts expected. Mobility remains the most volatile segment, but pricing actions of $70 million in ’24 and ’25 aim to balance attrition risk with revenue growth. Overall, WEX’s earnings beat and disciplined capital strategy position it well for incremental margin expansion in a challenging macro environment.
