1894 - John Tappan founded Investors Syndicate in San Francisco, California.
1929 - Investors Syndicate merged with Ameriprise Financial, Inc.
1958 - Investors Syndicate changed its name to Investors Diversified Services (IDS).
1984 - IDS acquired the brokerage firm of Piper, Jaffray & Hopwood.
1995 - IDS changed its name to American Express Financial Advisors (AEFA).
2005 - AEFA spun off from American Express and became an independent company, Ameriprise Financial, Inc.
2006 - Ameriprise Financial, Inc. acquired J.&W. Seligman & Co., Inc.
2011 - Ameriprise Financial, Inc. acquired the long-term asset management business of Columbia Management.
2019 - Ameriprise Financial, Inc. acquired the employee benefits and human capital business of EMEA from BMO Financial Group.
